The Louisiana print features Untitled (1966-67) by Danish artist Poul Gernes (1925-1996), a key figure of Denmark’s post-war art scene. Gernes challenged the commercial art market and the traditional artist myth, opting instead for a democratic, systemic approach. His work, often using symbols like stripes, circles, and squares, encouraged viewers to arrange them as they saw fit.
Although his art is associated with vibrant colors and minimalism, it also reflected his confrontational stance. He believed art should be accessible, requiring no prior knowledge to be appreciated—seen in his large public projects like Palads Cinema and Herlev Hospital.
Gernes emerged from the constructivist tradition and was central to the Eks School (Experimental Art School, 1961-1972), which revolutionized Danish art. This era of artistic experimentation coincided with Denmark’s transformation into a welfare state, a shift Louisiana Museum was also part of.
